values, values, values

Values has been on the agenda once again today with another staff workshop, today's outcomes were: people, learning and excitement. A few interesting questions also came up... Should a museum store things that are never seen by the public? How can we educate the public to handle objects correctly? What is the fine balance between conservation and access?

We've also been finding out what's currently happening in and around GMRC with the Collections' Navigator, in the Access and Education department and on a public tour.

We're currently compiling a list of examples of good practice. These could be open access stores such as at the National Railway Museum, examples of good archiving systems such as the BBC or places which the public can easily navigate around such as Ikea. If you've got any good examples of places that you think do things well, please leave us a comment.

work-shopping

Today we ran a workshop with some of the staff here at GMRC. We got our maps and multicoloured post-it notes out and set about plotting the services available in the local area. We looked at what GMRC can offer Glasgow and the local community, some of the things that work and what could change. After a refreshing cup of tea and a biscuit the group split into two to identified GMRC's values and, without any conferring (!!), both came up with almost the same top three: conservation, accessibility, inclusive and learning. Do you agree with these top values? If not let us know what you think!

Thanks to Linda, Clare, Fiona, Annemarie, Alison, Jim and Willie for taking part today!

We are also going to run a workshop next Friday (30th) with a group of local people, if you have any suggestions of people we could invite we'd like to hear about it.
